My inspiration for my life motto 'Live.Laugh.Love' came in 2008 shortly after reading Elizabeth Gilbert's very intriguing 'Eat, Pray, Love'. I wondered shortly after reading on a life motto that was relevant in my life and in alignment with what I believe in. 'Live, Laugh, Love' soon popped in my mind and I found that it was very apt especially since it began with the same letter as my name - Laura.
I've envisioned several things that I could develop Live.Laugh.Love to be and one was forming a group of close friends who are able to journey and grow together both spiritually and in friendship. So thus, the group was formed in 2012 (which started when one of the members asked if my life motto could be used as our group name. Of course I said yes!) and I'm happy to share that the group has been growing strong and faithful in its purpose.
Opening up a Live.Laugh.Love related blog has been on my mind for a long long time and I'm glad that I finally did so today (20 March 2014). Incidentally today is International Happiness Day so I am gonna take it as a sign that this is a happy thing that I'm choosing to do today. :)) As I was thinking further about Live.Laugh.Love and what I hope it would do for the readers out there, The Starfish Story (by Loren Eiseley) came to my mind. There are several variants to the story but the moral of the stories are one.
Once upon a time, there was a man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a child, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The child was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The child paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled man. To this, the child replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the man commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!” At this, the child bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
I never fail to shed a tear or feel a lump in my throat whenever I hear or read this story. It really touches me, how we do make a difference, one step at a time, even if it doesn't seem like much. Mother Theresa also sums it up well with saying, “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love". With this in mind, we are all starfish in this journey of life and I hope that this blog and its contents do make a difference to your life, even if in a small way, just like it will surely make a difference in mine. :))

Just your typical girl next door, born and bred in sunny Singapore with a racial background of Eurasian and a heritage that is often simply described as 'rojak' (more about my heritage identity in another post). I'm a cradle Catholic who loves God as her saviour and king and who attempts everyday to exude the Christian way of life in my thoughts, words and deeds. I am the eldest in my family with two younger brothers whom I love and adore and whom I endearingly refer to as 'my babies'. My lovely mum is my hero, BFF, confidante and most ardent cheerleader all rolled into one. I have a wonderful group of girlfriends and some guy friends who love and support me and whom I do just the same. I am an aspiring psychologist, which simply means I am on that long arduous journey of eventually becoming a practising psychologist who hopes to make a difference in the lives of the mentally challenged individuals by helping them cope and assimilate into society as well as helping individuals cope with any issues or challenges that they may have. I'm a self-declared foodie and love food. Like really. I believe in the phrase 'Live to Eat' and find it really hard to say no when someone offers me chocolate. I love travelling. I have plans to conquer the world. Okay, to visit as many parts of the world as I can. As long as I can afford to do so. I am currently learning Spanish and hope to learn French too! I used to ride a Vespa. I still keep my Barbie dolls and some very precious toys since I was a child and it's probably all gonna be compiled into a heirloom for my future generations. I'm dating my best friend and am looking forward to the day I say I do. ;)) I'm looking forward to having kids of my own and to sing to them songs that I randomly make up. I'm really an introvert contrary to what many would think. I'm a dreamer, a story teller and the main star actress in the story of my life.
